GPT-5.6 and the new voice model — what changed in ChatGPT

Two OpenAI releases landed this month and they affect different people. Here is what actually changed, and whether it is a reason to pay for anything.

GPT-5.6, in three sizes

OpenAI released GPT-5.6 publicly on 9 July 2026, split into three tiers named Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol is the flagship, and scored 88.8% on Terminal-Bench 2.1.1 — a benchmark for driving a command line, so it is aimed squarely at people writing code.

If you are not writing code, the honest answer is that you will struggle to feel the difference between this and GPT-5.5, which arrived in April. Model version numbers move faster than the everyday experience does.

GPT-Live — the one you will actually notice

The more interesting release is GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models that can listen and speak at the same time. In practice that removes the walkie-talkie rhythm older voice modes had, where you waited for it to finish before you could interrupt.

ChatGPT Voice now runs on GPT-Live-1 for paid accounts and GPT-Live-1 mini for free accounts. This is the clearest split between free and paid ChatGPT we have seen in a while, and it is the first one in a long time where we think the paid tier is genuinely worth it for non-technical users — particularly if you are practising spoken English or working through something out loud.

One thing worth knowing: since 31 July 2026, audio generated through GPT-Live carries SynthID watermarking. If you are producing voice content for work, assume it is detectable as AI-generated.

Still no GPT-6

Despite a steady stream of rumours, there is no GPT-6. The sequence so far is GPT-5.5 in April and GPT-5.6 in July. Anyone selling you "GPT-6 access" is selling you nothing.

What we would actually tell you to buy

ChatGPT Plus with us is 4,499 ETB a month, on a private account set up on your own email. We no longer sell a shared tier — the better voice model and the higher limits are worth more when the account is only yours, and nobody else is burning your usage.

Take private if you are putting confidential work in, or if you want it permanently on your own email address. If you only use ChatGPT for occasional text questions, the free tier is still perfectly reasonable and we would rather say so.
