Why your Ethiopian card is declined on Netflix and ChatGPT

People often assume the card decline is a mistake, or that a VPN will get them through. Usually neither is the case, and understanding why saves a lot of wasted evenings.

What actually happens

Netflix, Spotify, OpenAI and the rest bill in foreign currency through the international card networks, usually as a recurring charge. Whether a card issued in Ethiopia can make that payment depends on the bank that issued it: some cards are enabled for international online payments, many everyday debit cards are not, and limits and conditions vary from bank to bank.

When the card is not enabled, the payment is refused and the service shows a generic "declined" message. Netflix's own help page lists the same kinds of cause — a payment method that does not support online transactions, or a check by the issuing bank (Netflix: payment declined).

Why a VPN does not help

A VPN changes where your traffic appears to come from. It does not change which bank issued your card or what that bank allows. The payment still fails, and you have paid for a VPN as well.

The options that do work

• Ask your bank — if it offers a card enabled for international online payments, that may be the simplest route. Ask about limits and fees first.
• A foreign card or account — works, if you or someone you trust has one. It means relying on them every billing date.
• Gift cards or prepaid credit — some services accept them, many do not, and some only accept cards from the country the account was opened in. Check the service's own help pages before you buy.

What to watch out for

This gap has produced a lot of sellers, and the quality varies wildly. Before you pay anyone:

• Ask what happens if the account stops working in week three. A seller with no answer is selling you one month of luck.
• Check whether they keep a record of your payment reference. If they cannot look up your order, they cannot support it.
• Be sceptical of prices far below everyone else. Usually it is a slot on a heavily overloaded account that will be reset within weeks.
