Why your Ethiopian card is declined on Netflix and ChatGPT

People often assume the card decline is a mistake, or that a VPN will get them through. Neither is true, and understanding why saves a lot of wasted evenings.

What actually happens

Netflix, Spotify, OpenAI and the rest bill in US dollars through international card networks. An Ethiopian birr card issued domestically generally cannot settle a foreign-currency recurring charge, because the foreign exchange approval that would allow it does not exist for consumer subscriptions.

The decline happens at the bank, not at Netflix. That is why the error message is usually vague.

Why a VPN does not help

A VPN changes where your traffic appears to come from. It does not change what currency your card can settle in, or which country issued it. The payment still fails, you have just paid for a VPN as well.

The options that do work

• A foreign card or account — works, if you have access to one. Most people do not.
• Gift cards — you buy dollar-denominated credit and load it onto the account. This is essentially what our top-up service does for you.

What to watch out for

This gap has produced a lot of sellers, and the quality varies wildly. Before you pay anyone:

• Ask what happens if the account stops working in week three. A seller with no answer is selling you one month of luck.
• Check whether they keep a record of your payment reference. If they cannot look up your order, they cannot support it.
• Be sceptical of prices far below everyone else. Usually it is a slot on a heavily overloaded account that will be reset within weeks.
