Is Netflix available in Ethiopia? How to buy and pay in birr

Is Netflix available in Ethiopia?

Why your card is declined

Netflix's own help page on declined payments lists the usual causes: details that do not match, a payment method that does not support online (e-commerce) transactions, and checks by the issuing bank. It also notes that cross-border fees may apply. Netflix: payment declined.

For most birr cards the sticking point is the second and third of those. Whether a card issued in Ethiopia is enabled for international online payments, and on what terms, is decided by the bank that issued it — and most everyday birr debit cards are not enabled for a recurring foreign-currency charge. That is a question for your bank, not something Netflix or we can change.

Three things are worth knowing, because a lot of advice online gets them wrong:

• A VPN does not help. A VPN changes where your traffic appears to come from. It does not change where your card was issued or how your bank treats the charge. Netflix works in Ethiopia without one — it is the payment step that fails.
• Ask your bank before trying every card you own. Banks differ on which cards allow international online payments and what limits apply. If yours offers it and you can fund it, that may be the simplest route of all; if it does not, retrying will not change the answer.
• The error message is generic. Netflix says your payment was declined, which reads as though the card is faulty. Usually it is working normally — it is just not enabled for this kind of charge.

Three payment routes to consider

These routes suit different needs. Before choosing, check who controls the account, who manages renewals and what fees apply. Direct payments still depend on Netflix accepting the payment method.

1. Someone abroad pays with their card

A friend or relative abroad may be able to pay for your Netflix account with a card Netflix accepts. The card still needs sufficient funds, support for online recurring payments and any approval required by its issuing bank. Check subscription, currency-conversion and bank charges before choosing this route. Netflix's accepted payment methods explains the requirements.

The catch is that it is a standing favour. Netflix bills every month, so somebody has to remember, keep a card on file, and be reachable when it expires or the bank reissues it. It works well for a month or two and tends to get awkward after that.

2. A virtual dollar card you fund yourself

Some services issue a virtual card in US dollars that you top up, then use on Netflix like any other card. When the card is accepted, this is a real solution, and it is the right answer if you want to hold the payment method yourself and use it across several sites. Check before you fund one: availability to Ethiopian residents, fees and whether Netflix accepts a given issuer's cards all vary, and Netflix can decline prepaid or virtual cards like any other.

What people underestimate is the total effort. You are creating an account with the card issuer, funding it in dollars, paying whatever the issuer charges to load and to convert, then still managing the Netflix account, the renewal date and any failed charge yourself. If the card runs dry mid-month, Netflix suspends the account and you are back at the start.

Some Ethiopian banks issue dollar cards of their own. Dashen Bank and Awash Bank both offer a prepaid Mastercard in US dollars, with a virtual version for online payments, and Bank of Abyssinia offers international Visa cards. The hard part is getting dollars onto one. These cards are built for travellers: Dashen and Awash both ask for your passport, a visa and a flight ticket at a forex bureau or branch, and in practice there is a form to fill in and a reason for the trip to give. 3. Pay in birr and have it set up for you

What Netflix costs in birr

Paying in birr, step by step

1. Pick the option and the length. The full price is shown before you commit to anything, and the per-month figure sits next to each duration so the longer options are easy to compare.
2. Pay from your phone. Telebirr, CBE, Awash or Dashen — whichever you already use. The account details are shown at checkout and you send the exact amount.
3. Upload the confirmation screenshot. That is how the payment is matched to your order, along with the transaction number from your SMS.
4. Get set up. We confirm payment before sending setup details on Telegram or WhatsApp. Timing depends on the service and current availability.

If it still is not working

• Netflix says your account is on hold. The billing date has passed without a successful charge. Nothing is lost — profiles and history survive — and it resumes once the account is funded again.

• You are being asked to change the password. On a shared profile, do not. It signs everyone out and locks you out too. Message us first.

Can I pay Netflix directly with an Ethiopian-issued card?

Usually not. Most everyday birr debit cards are not enabled for international online payments, so Netflix declines them.
