Gemini 3.8 Flash is out — what changed and who gets it

Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash on 2 September 2026, three weeks after 3.7 Flash. This is a summary of what Google itself publishes about it — the model card and Google's announcement — and nothing we cannot point to.

What changed from 3.7 Flash

• Built on 3.7 Flash. Google describes 3.8 Flash as building on its predecessor, with improvements in software engineering and agentic knowledge work — tasks that run for many steps rather than single answers.
• Customisable effort levels. You can trade quality against cost and speed, as with 3.7 Flash.
• Same context size. Up to 1 million tokens of input and 64,000 tokens of output, with a knowledge cutoff of March 2026.
• Same API price as 3.7 Flash. $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens, according to Google's announcement.

What the model card does not claim

Earlier versions of this post repeated specific response-time and mobile data-use figures. Google publishes none of them, so we have removed them. The model card's own known limitations include occasional slowness or timeout issues, which is worth knowing if you were expecting the opposite.

Who gets it

For consumers, Google says 3.8 Flash is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search and Sheets. Developers reach it through the Gemini API and AI Studio.

Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT?

• Gemini (Google AI Pro) makes most sense if you already live in Gmail, Docs and Drive — the AI sits inside them, and Google bundles cloud storage with the plan.
• Claude Pro suits long writing, careful editing and work on large documents or code.
• ChatGPT Plus suits people who want the widest set of built-in tools, such as image generation and voice, in one app.
