What is Claude Research? How it works and when to use it
Claude Research is a feature inside Claude.ai for questions that need more than one quick search. Claude works through a topic in multiple steps, checks information across the web and any connected sources you allow, then returns a longer answer with citations.
What is Claude Research?
Anthropic describes Research as a way to investigate complex questions across the web and connected internal context. If Google Workspace is connected, that context can include Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Research is available on paid Claude plans, including Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
Claude Research vs web search vs extended thinking
- Web search is best for a current fact or a small number of sources.
- Extended thinking gives Claude more time to reason through a difficult problem using the context already available.
- Research is for broader investigations that require several searches, comparisons and a cited synthesis.
What Claude Research is not
It is not a separate Linux or macOS scientific-computing product, and Anthropic does not present it as an autonomous laboratory system. Researchers and students can use it for literature discovery, planning and source comparison, but important claims still need to be checked against the cited paper or primary source.
Learn it through Claude Academy
Claude Academy is Anthropic's official learning hub. Its Using Research tutorial demonstrates the feature through practical planning tasks. Anthropic's Research help page explains how the feature uses web and connected sources.
