Gemini 3.6 Flash: Google’s July release and the 3.5 Pro wait

Google announced three models on 21 July 2026. This is a summary of what Google itself published — its announcement and the DeepMind post on Flash Cyber — with anything we could not source left out. Last checked 3 October 2026.

Gemini 3.6 Flash

Google calls it the new workhorse model, with better coding, knowledge work and multimodal understanding than 3.5 Flash. Its own comparisons against 3.5 Flash:

• DeepSWE (long software-engineering tasks): 49% against 37%
• MLE-Bench (machine-learning engineering): 63.9% against 49.7%
• OSWorld-Verified (operating a computer): 83.0% against 78.4%

It also takes fewer steps to reach an answer. Google measures 17% fewer output tokens than 3.5 Flash on the Artificial Analysis Index, and up to 65% fewer on some individual benchmarks. The API price is lower than 3.5 Flash's: $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens.

The part that matters if you never touch the API: Google said 3.6 Flash was rolling out for everyone in the Gemini app, so app users get it without changing anything.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite

The fastest and cheapest model in the 3.5 range, built for high-volume work. Google quotes around 350 output tokens a second and an API price of $0.30 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output. It was also rolling out in Google Search and the Gemini app.

Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber — not a consumer product

A version of 3.5 Flash fine-tuned to find and fix security vulnerabilities, and the model inside Google's CodeMender agent. In its July announcement, Google said it would become available soon, only to governments and trusted partners through a limited-access pilot. That announcement did not offer consumer subscription access; this post does not establish whether the pilot has since opened.

The model that did not ship

Gemini 3.5 Pro was not in the July release. When Google announced the 3.5 family on 19 May it said Pro would roll out "next month". In July its line was that 3.5 Pro is "currently testing with partners" and will be made broadly available "as soon as it's ready", and that pre-training for Gemini 4 had begun.

Google has not given a reason for the delay in the sources linked above. We therefore do not repeat an explanation as fact. The latest position this article can substantiate is Google's July statement that 3.5 Pro was testing with partners and would be released broadly when ready.

The Flash line has kept moving instead: 3.7 Flash followed in August and 3.8 Flash on 2 September.

Should you wait for 3.5 Pro before subscribing?

Google's July announcement gave no broad-release date for 3.5 Pro. Decide based on the features available to you now; a one-month option is available if you do not want a longer commitment.

The reasons people choose Gemini have little to do with the model number anyway. It sits inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, and Google bundles cloud storage with the plan — useful if you already keep your work there. If you do not, compare it with ChatGPT and Claude on three of your own real tasks before deciding.
